It is easy to become ill during the transition from summer to autumn. There are six pieces of advice on how to stay healthy during the changing of the seasons.
By making subtle changes in your daily life, you may be able to improve your health. For instance, if you eat vegetables that are rich in vitamins, you will improve your immune system. Hou Yurui, vice-secretary-general of the China Cuisine Association(CCA), and Liu Yinghua, physician-in-charge of the Nutrition Department of the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army, or Hospital 301, have provided the following suggestions on how to keep fit between summer and autumn.
As the weather changes, you should take steps to improve your immune system. To prevent colds, you should eat vegetables that contain vitamin C.
Doctors who practice traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) refer to cauliflower as “white treasure,” as its vitamin C content is three or four times higher than that of Chinese cabbage and soybean sprouts, and two times greater than that of oranges and tangerines. Cauliflower will help you prevent colds and some other respiratory diseases, and it will help clean your blood vessels.
Lettuce, which is rich in iodine, improves metabolism. There is greater nutrition in lettuce leaves compared with the stems. If you have a cough, you should eat more lettuce leaves.
As the weather turns cool, you might feel like eating fish and meat. However, your stomach might have a difficult time digesting too many rich foods within a short period, especially if your stomach adjusted to light foods during the summer. Therefore, you should eat some vegetables to improve digestion.
Fragrant-flowered garlic, which contains carotene, protein and coarse fiber, is the best option, as it helps prevent indigestion, improve the functions of the spleen, and sharpen the appetite.
